Junior-Faculty Development Education Session: Understanding the Basics of the Academic Job

Description:

This session will focus on understanding the basics of academic careers and will include discussion of topics such as looking for an academic job, strategies for success for junior faculty and understanding promotion and tenure.

Dr. Jan Abkowitz will provide an overview of what types of academic jobs are available and what it means to work in an academic setting including clinical, research, and academic responsibilities. The session should also give an understanding of tenure vs. non-tenure positions, discuss a general timeline of when in fellowship to start actively pursuing a job and how to prepare for an interview.

Dr. Stephanie Lee will discuss what is needed to be successful in an academic setting, how to negotiate salary, benefits and the position, and how to achieve work-life balance.

Drs. Robert Liem and John Wagner will discuss the topic of promotion and tenure from both a senior and junior faculty perspective. The speakers will review the process and discuss the timeline, structure and milestones that need to be met. The speakers will also discuss their own promotion process and/or will discuss real life successful and unsuccessful situations.
