Challenging Anticoagulation Scenarios

Patients at high risk for stroke or recurrence of venous thromboembolic disease pose a frequent clinical challenge if they have a relative contraindication to oral anticoagulant therapy. Two common scenarios are patients who are at high risk for bleeding because of renal disease or because they have suffered a recent hemorrhagic event. Some guidelines recommend against anticoagulation for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation for patients with advanced renal disease.

Renato Lopes will discuss which patients with renal disease are candidates and which oral anticoagulants have the best supporting data in this population.

Another common scenario is if and when to restart anticoagulation after a bleeding event and Scott Kaatz will cover this topic. We will use a case-based interactive learning format and will employ an audience response system to keep the session highly interactive.
