Description:
This educational session will cover the pathophysiology of rare hemolytic anemias and focus on diagnosis and clinical management.
Dr. Andreas Holbro will discuss hemolytic anemias that arise following allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Topics covered will include prevention and management of hemolytic anemia due to red cell ABO incompatibility, autoimmune hemolytic anemia in the post-transplant setting, and post-transplant thrombotic microangiopathy.
Dr. Robert Brodsky will discuss the molecular and cellular defects associated with complement-mediated hemolytic anemias. Particular emphasis will be placed on the diagnosis and clinical management of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome. He will also discuss novel methods to reliably distinguish atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome from thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and the appropriate use of complement inhibitors to treat complement-related disorders.
Dr. Patrick Gallagher will discuss the diagnosis and clinical management of rare inherited non-immune hemolytic disease. A review of clinical findings, inheritance, laboratory manifestations, and management considerations in rare congenital hemolytic diseases will be provided. Topics to be covered include disorders of the erythrocyte membrane, erythrocyte metabolism, and relevant disorders of hemoglobin.
