Description:
In this session, three leading experts will discuss cutting-edge approaches to the diagnosis and management of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Optimal strategies for the diagnosis and management of VTE are changing rapidly with the introduction of new tests, new drugs, and new mechanical devices.
Prof. Menno Huisman will discuss recent advances in imaging techniques including new uses of older technology and recent advances using "cutting edge" technology in imaging both routine and more complex cases of suspected venous thromboembolism.
Dr. Casey O'Connell will discuss current best practices with respect to the management of patients with incidentally detected venous thromboembolism. Incidental VTE is commonly encountered in patients undergoing examinations for disorders such as lung cancer or liver disease. Incidental VTE presents a management conundrum for clinicians as such patients frequently lack compatible clinical symptoms and may have risk factors for bleeding if antithrombotic treatment is considered.
Dr. Suresh Vedantham will discuss current "best practices" with respect to the use of clot thrombolysis and stenting for patients with both uncomplicated and complicated VTE. Evidence supporting the use of such practices and studies currently examining interventional approaches to VTE will be presented. These three speakers will provide the audience with an up-to-the-minute review of current practices that we anticipate will have immediate application in the clinic.
