Join us for a breakfast meeting directed towards second-year Medical Student Hematology course directors. Speakers discuss several of the tools and methods available for teaching a second-year hematology course and for promoting the educational environment. The breakfast provides a forum for discussion of medical student education issues shared by course directors and has resulted in the development of shared resources, such as the ASH Teaching Cases. Dr. Harry Hollander will discuss how the UCSF Academy for Medical Educators was founded with the goal of improving the quality of medical education at the University of California, San Francisco. He will also explore the impact it has had on the quality of medical student teaching and faculty development at UCSF. Dr. Andrew Leavitt will discuss the innovations of the UCSF Medical Student Hematology Course. He will explore its challenges and successes. Dr. Shirley Parker Levine will discuss the ASH Teaching Cases. She will review five new cases on the ASH Web site, the demographic statistics of those using the cases, and a hemostasis-related animation. Dr. Mark Juckett will give an update on the draft of the Medical Student Hematology Course Learning Objectives. These objectives were developed to aid course directors in curriculum development and implementation of competencies for second-year medical students. Dr. Scott Gitlin will discuss techniques on educating medical students about careers in hematology. He will preview some current resources available to hematology course directors.
